The role of PID in 3D printers
PID calibration plays a critical role in 3d Printing. It ensures that the printer’s nozzle or bed can maintain a precise temperature, thereby improving print quality and temperature control accuracy. Without proper PID calibration, the temperature may deviate from the set value, leading to issues such as decreased print quality, slower print speeds, and wasted material.
In particular, in environments with lower temperatures and larger bed areas, the printer may not be able to reach the target temperature accurately. Long periods of time without reaching the target temperature can cause the printer to stop working and trigger the “Error: Thermal Runaway, system stoPPed! Heater_ID: bed” error message. This can damage the printer and waste both materials and time.
Furthermore, at the start of a print, the nozzle temperature may take 2-3 minutes to reach the set temperature, causing excessive material loss in the nozzle. In such cases, more skirt lines may be necessary to reduce waste and improve print quality. However, with correct PID calibration, the nozzle temperature can stabilize faster, reducing material loss and the need for skirt lines, while improving print efficiency and quality.
