Poly Lactic Acid, or PLA, is the most common 3D printing filament and the easiest to use. Unlike most plastics, it's made from corn starches so it is non-toxic and, in theory, compostable, though it takes an industrial composter to do it. PLA uses a fairly low heat -- between 190 and 220 degrees Celsius (or between 374 and 428 degrees Fahrenheit) -- to melt the plastic for extrusion so it is the safest of the filaments. Almost every FDM 3D printer in the world can print PLA.

Being successful with PLA is an essential skill to develop as you are likely to stick with PLA for most of you're projects until you find yourself working on more demanding use cases. PLA is great for demonstration models, jigs, fixtures, your average around-the-office 3D print, or even full-body costumes, so let's jump into what you need to know to perform at your best.

Is PLA actually biodegradable?
7 Jan 2019
Under optimal industrial composting conditions, PLA can biodegrade to a significant reduction in mass in around 30 to 60 days. However, in less ideal environments, the process can take much longer. In landfill or cold home composting setups, PLA often degrades no faster than plastics derived from fossil fuels
Key factors affecting PLA degradation :
1.Additives: Some PLA consumables will add plasticizers (such as phthalates) or light stabilizers, which may slow down the degradation rate.
2.Crystallinity: PLA with high crystallinity is more difficult to degrade, while PLA formed at low temperatures (such as FDM) usually has low crystallinity and degrades faster.
3.Processing technology: Excessively high extrusion temperature may cause degradation of PLA molecular chains, which in turn reduces its degradability.
